Calls that save lives

Every day, someone in crisis makes a call to Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland.

“I don’t know what made me make that call, but I am so, so thankful that I did. It terrifies me to think that I was about to take my own life. The man I spoke to gave me the courage to keep going and get help. He’s the reason I’m still here.” - Jake*

When Jake called Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland, he was desperate and despairing, on the edge of suicide.

Every day, as many as eight Australians make the heartbreaking decision to end their lives, leaving grief-stricken families behind them. But with the right help at the right time, suicide can be prevented.

Wesley Mission created Lifeline in 1963 to make sure people have somewhere to turn when no one else is there. Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland takes more than 40,000 calls each year. Any one of those calls could be a matter of life or death.

People call us when they are alone, afraid or feel that life is not worth living. Callers talk about their health problems, unemployment, relationship or financial stresses, past traumas or problems with alcohol, drugs or gambling.

Your gift today could help make sure a trained crisis supporter is on the other end of that phone every time it rings. Like Peter, who in the three years since he began volunteering with Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland, while studying for his Master’s in counselling, has answered calls from people in crisis all over Australia.

“I don’t remember every suicidal call, but I’ll never forget the first one,” said Peter. “When people have suicidal thoughts, we really want to be there for them in that desperate time.”

With your support we can raise $100,000 (or more) so that someone may be there to answer every single call.
