City2Surf with Rachael Wheldall: back for more

5 July 2016 Wesley Mission news

Are you still thinking about taking part in the 2016 Sun-Herald City2Surf on Sunday 14 August 2016? There's still plenty of time to get training so go ahead and sign up to join our Wesley Mission team.

Our team goal this year is to raise $10,000 for the Wesley KickStart – a program helping young people to successfully transition from foster care to independent living.

Not only will your fundraising help this fantastic cause but it is also a great to get fit and have fun with your family, friends and colleagues too!

Wesley Mission runner, Rachael Wheldall, knows this all too well – she has already completed the race twice before and is looking forward to this year’s event.

How many years have you been participating in the City2Surf for? This is my second year.

What was your time for last year’s City2Surf? 109 minutes. This year I’m aiming for under 90 minutes.

What is your greatest athletic or sporting achievement? A tie between finishing the City2Surf last year and the first time I finished my sets of deadlifting a 35kg barbell.

What is your training schedule in the months leading to the City2Surf? Short runs before work twice a week, a long run on the weekend and strength training three times a week.

What kind of running shoes do you prefer for the City2Surf? I think mine were from Big W!

Do you have a special pre and/or post race meal planned? The night before I’m going to have lots of pasta, morning of I’ll have porridge and a banana, and afterwards I’ll be going for a giant potato and blue cheese pizza.

What is your most memorable City2Surf experience? Turning the corner and seeing the finish line on Bondi Beach and knowing I was going to make it. That gave me a final burst of energy and I was able to run all of that final stretch.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of taking part in the City2Surf for the first time, to raise money for Wesley Mission? It really helps to stay motivated by remembering that with every step you’re helping Wesley Mission support people who are in need. Also, the race is so much fun – people cheering you along, music, lots of people in crazy costumes and the best views in Sydney.

From humble beginnings in 1971, the Sun-Herald City2Surf is the largest race of its kind in the world. If you’re thinking about taking part in this iconic Sydney event, we’d love to have you as part of the Wesley Mission team.
