Taking part is obviously good for your health and great way involve your friends and family in fundraising but you’ll get to get to meet passionate Wesley Mission staff who are also running, people like Malae Sega.

A seasoned City2Surf campaigner, Malae knows all too well how steep Heartbreak Hill is. She also knows the joy of competing as part of team Wesley Mission. Wesley Mission news sat down with Malae to check in on her thoughts ahead of the big race.

How many times have you ran the City2Surf? This year will be my third time

What is your role at Wesley Mission? Secretary, Wesley Legal

How long have you worked for Wesley Mission? 26 years

What was your time for last year’s City2Surf? I have always finished in less than 2 hrs. Only by a few seconds in the first year and last year it was 1:56 so I am slowly improving!

What’s your greatest sporting achievement? Attending the 2015 Rugby World Cup in Twickenham where the All Blacks beat the ‘Wannabies’.

What’s your City2Surf training schedule? Zumba twice a week and also walking two to three times a week.

What kind of running shoes do you prefer for the City2Surf? Any, usually my Nikes – just do it!

Do you have a special pre-race meal planned? Not really, but I’m going to have a big breakfast before the race, probably boiled eggs with avocado and quinoa bread.

What’s your most memorable City2Surf experience? Finishing in less than two hours and knowing that ‘I made it!’ Especially getting up Heartbreak Hill. I love it when people line the streets – clapping and encouraging us all the way to Bondi!

What advice would you give to someone thinking of taking part in the City2Surf for the first time? Do it to raise funds for Wesley Mission.

From humble beginnings in 1971, the Sun-Herald City2Surf is the largest race of its kind in the world. If you’re thinking about taking part in this iconic Sydney event, we’d love to have you as part of the Wesley Mission team.
