Local hero brings joy to children this Christmas

14 December 2017 Wesley Mission news

Mother of two, Alex, had a problem—too many toys and not enough space to keep them.

“I’ve always looked around my house and seen all the ridiculous toys and I’ve always thought, 'These toys can go to kids who actually need them who’ll appreciate them more than our privileged kids'.”

While completing a professional and personal development course this year, an opportunity came about to make a difference in the lives of children in need, while decluttering her own home. As part of her course, Alex was required to implement a community project. Called 'Give a New Life', Alex began collecting second-hand quality toys from her local area and donated them to organisations, including Wesley Mission, who help children most in need.

“When the opportunity came I thought I’m going to do that. And I’m sure there’s a lot of ladies in my local area who have the same issue where we’re overrun with toys,” said Alex.

“I’m really interested in how Wesley Mission is so large and all the different streams of where people are vulnerable. ‘Cause there’s so many and the fact that it’s far reaching, so I knew contributing to Wesley would just go everywhere.”

Alex has donated over 400 toys to Wesley Mission.

Alex has donated over 400 toys to Wesley Mission to help kids in need this Christmas.

Donations flooded in and Wesley Mission has received 74 brand-new toys, 240 second-hand toys, 50 soft toys and 60 books through Alex’s project.

“I am so proud of the accomplishments of this project and to everyone that’s had any involvement in this,” said Alex on Facebook.

“To all the donors who donated toys, books, clothes, sticky tape, wrapping paper, packing boxes, donors who dropped off toys to my house... you all know who you are! I will never forget the generosity from the community and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”

In addition to Alex's donations, other passionate Wesley Mission supporters have contributed by donating toys. Wesley Connect, a food and care program which assists vulnerable members of our community, are distributing the toys to families and children who are living on the margins this Christmas.
