Treasurer Scott Morrison guest speaker at the inaugural Gordon Moyes Lecture
The Wesley Lyceum was full to the brim last week for the inaugural Gordon Moyes Lecture. The Chair of the Wesley Community Services Board, Mark Scott AO, began the occasion by reflecting on the work of our former CEO the Rev Dr Gordon Moyes AC.
“It is appropriate to recognise the Christian ministry of Gordon Moyes by inaugurating this lecture,” he said.
Our Superintendent the Rev Keith V Garner, AM also acknowledged the great work of Gordon before introducing a video presentation looking at how he shaped Wesley Mission so significantly.
The guest speaker Federal Treasurer the Hon Scott Morrison MP spoke highly of Gordon as he began his address.
“Gordon ventured into all of life’s difficult topics,” said the Treasurer before speaking on the often controversial policy area of social welfare.
“The welfare system can catch you when you fall but it must do more to help you bounce back,” he said.
He also acknowledged the place of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
“The Federal Government seeks to implement the next great social reform, the NDIS.”
From there Mr Morrison spoke on other areas such as community-business partnerships, private investment in social enterprises and superannuation.
“One of the weaknesses of our superannuation system is that it assumes one size fits all,” he said.
Mr Morrison closed his address with a final acknowledgment of the intrepid nature of Gordon Moyes in assisting those in need.
“Gordon was a man of action, unafraid of change,” he said.
